The Rap Up with Gray Thomas: April 2015

Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment – “Sunday Candy”

One of my favorite songs of the year gets the usual fantastic visual treatment from Chance and Co. Chance is someone that doesn’t sacrifice an ounce of artistic integrity and really makes you feel good about the direction his career is heading. Everything he does is always dripping with purpose.

Tyler, The Creator – “F*cking Young

The most creative individual of the new generation put out this video to serve as the lead piece off of his album Cherry Bomb. It’s utterly awesome and goes into his song “Deathcamp” and switches up to a Mad Max themed treatment. Tyler is getting very tough to deny.

Future – “March Madness

Future Hendrix’s project 56 Nights is without a doubt his strongest effort since his meteoric rise, and this single from the tape is outrageously infectious. He made a hit & touched on the rampant police brutality, as well as where his relationship with Ciara went wrong. Future is back on Pluto, and I’m thrilled.

Boogie – “Oh My

The Jahlil Beats-produced single is bound for summer anthem status. I’ve mentioned Boogie in this space before, but this is going to be the track to push him on to everyone’s radar. His album The Reach drops this summer.

Janelle Monáe & Jidenna – “Yoga

This is another song that will get a lot of traction this summer. Janelle is one of the best artists out right now. She usually goes in on concept albums, but this is destined straight for DJs and clubs, with her new protégé Jidenna joining her on the track.

Skepta – “Shutdown

This song bangs so hard. Skepta was responsible for “getting all the goons” on stage for Kanye’s “All Day” performance at the Brit Awards and followed it up with a co-sign from Drake. Many talented artists make their way over here from across the pond, but it’s dope to see a rapper start to make an impact here.

Songs:

Vic Mensa feat. Kanye West – “U Mad

This accompanied Vic’s Roc Nation announcement. I actually like it more than Kanye’s “All Day” and think it’s going to be everywhere all spring and to jump summer off.

Jeremih featuring Chance The Rapper produced by The Social Experiment – “Planes (Remix)

This was the original version of Jeremih’s single and had previously been performed in public, but the official single had J. Cole on it and Vinylz as a producer. I love this version.

Camp featuring Fetty Wap – “1hunnid

Camp had some of the best hooks this year and last year. Fetty Wap currently has the #3 song in the country with “Trap Queen,” a Drake-remix of “My Way” coming soon. The combination of the two is about as infectious as it gets.

Twista feat. Do or Die – “Aquafina

These two have so many great songs together, and this is no different. If you’re a fan of classic Twista, this will suffice just fine.

Mick Jenkins – “Alchemy

Mick Jenkins had the best project of 2014 of any up-and-coming artist out there with The Waters. This is the intro track to the next project, Waves, and is probably the song I listened to the most this month outside of Boogie’s “Oh My.”
