Watch Tallows play a new song in an old, abandoned pool

tallows - shrink

I-guess-kind-of-beloved OKC band Tallows are about to drop a new album, Waist Deep, on Sept. 8. And while we’ve already heard one of the songs — the dazzling, Samantha Crain-assisted ballad “Sprawl” — the indie/electronic/pop/whatever act has offered up a new one, titled “Shrink,” this time in the form of a video. And it’s a good one.

While watching the “Shrink” video, you might notice something seems odd about the stage. That’s because that isn’t a stage; it’s actually an old, abandoned pool, which is notable because you don’t often see bands performing in old, abandoned pools. But Tallows march to the beat of their own drum machine, evident in the song’s typically whimsical, hard-hitting, damn near life-affirming melodic sensibility.

Here’s what Tallows vocalist Josh Hogsett told GoldFlakePaint about the whole pool thing:

Waist Deep is a record about feeling impartial and indecisive. Once we developed the cover art we decided to continue the pool theme to visually accompany the concept. The album release show will take place inside of the same empty pool on Sept. 12 where the video was shot.

There’s a weird backstory on the pool and I don’t know all the details — but here’s what I do know. The pool is located inside of a building that was once a church (which is why there are stained glass windows). It was then converted into a gym that never fully functioned as a gym, therefore the pool has never been filled!”

If you so desire (and you do), you can see Tallows perform above ground at Oxford Karma’s Endless Summer on Aug. 29 along with tons of other Oxford Karma-approved local acts. While you’re waiting for that, go ahead and pre-order Waist Deep via iTunes and watch the “Shrink” video below.
