Live from the OK: Motion City Soundtrack, Whores. on the horizon

Motion City Soundtrack

From hair gel gods to one-man bands, there are lots of weird shows coming to Oklahoma this week. Here are a few of our top picks:

Motion City Soundtrack with Team* and Driver Friendly
Friday, Feb. 6
Cain’s Ballroom | Tulsa

Clean the oven and check your tires, because Minneapolis pop-punk pillars Motion City Soundtrack are touring through the 918 in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Commit This to Memory. Get your hair gel affairs in order and rock out to “Everything Is Alright” like the high school freshman inside you craves.

Fossil Youth with Keeper, Thin Skin, Wallclouds and Plain Speak
Friday, Feb. 6
The Conservatory | Oklahoma City

No money for gas to Tulsa? Mourning the fact that your 1994 Toyota Corolla can’t run on tears? You can catch a quality emo show within Oklahoma City limits. Fossil Youth and Keeper are releasing a 7-inch and EP respectively, and they are joined by Oklahoma City’s newest class of heart-on-their-tattooed-sleeve rockers Thin Skin, Wallclouds, and Plain Speak.

Whores. with Traindodge and Brother Gruesome
Saturday, Feb. 7
Blue Note Lounge | Oklahoma City

You can pay $10 for these Whores. and not get arrested. The Atlanta heavy-noise rockers are joined by Oklahoma stoner-metal legends Traindodge and crusty OKC punks Brother Gruesome on a bill that smells like beer and sweat already.

Ramblin’ Pan with Young Readers
Saturday, Feb. 7
Michelangelo’s Coffee & Wine Bar | Norman

It’s been hard to see Young Readers of late, but here’s your opportunity to catch out-and-about singer-songwriter Jordan Herrera playing a set with Kansas City-based songsmith Ramblin’ Pan. The forecast calls for warm smiles and soft-spoken stage banter by these acoustic drifters, who are so sweet and sincere they make Ben Gibbard look like a Jersey Shore asshole by comparison.

Francisco the Man with Horse Thief and Forum
Sunday, Feb. 8
The Conservatory | Oklahoma City

Fat Possum (Wavves, Youth Lagoon, the good Black Keys records) put out Francisco the Man’s debut album, Loose Ends, last year, and it’s a fun mix of mainstream indie, shoegaze, and a dash of garage rock. Oklahoma City’s Horse Thief joins the Los Angeles four-piece for a small run through Texas leading up to this date.

Bowlsey with Crunk Witch, Doug Funnie, Akiba and DBOYD
Sunday, Feb. 8
Dope Chapel | Norman

Like a rainbow sno-cone, this big, fun bill brings the summer to February. Chilled-out, genre-defying Bowlsey heads up the lineup, with Maine’s touring, 8bit-pop duo Crunk Witch and DFW nerd-hop artist Doug Funnie (shoutout to Nickelodeon circa 1997) making it especially exciting.

That 1 Guy with Quilted Cherry Podium
Tuesday, Feb. 10
Opolis | Norman

Two bands. Two guys. Two one-of-a-kind instruments. Las Vegas madman That 1 Guy and his sentient muttonchops brings their Magic Pipe into Opolis, while Norman artist Hunter Roth helms his Quilted Cherry Podium (featuring a Drum Buddy and more), both showing that you can make a lot of noise with a little ingenuity.
