Oklahoma is a below-average drinking state, new study finds

Think you partied pretty hard this St. Patrick’s Day? Think again, Oklahoma. Other states probably partied way harder.

At least according to a new study by RecoveryFind.com, which found that Oklahoma ranks 42nd in the U.S. when it comes to binge drinking — as in 41 states do it better I mean more heavily than us.* The study defined the statistic as “the average largest number of drinks consumed by binge drinkers on any occasion in the past month,” information it acquired from the Centers for Disease Control because alcoholism is a disease, you lush.

Oklahoma also ranked 31st in number of bars and liquor stores per capita and 43rd in number of breweries, two areas in which I think we can all agree we need to do better.

Stray observations: Utah ranked last or almost last in every category, to the surprise of no one, but West Virginia being 49th in binge drinking is a little surprising. Clearly Mountaineer football games were not included in the study.

And Jesus Christ, Wisconsin. We need to talk. Have you seen your friends Montana and North Dakota? You don’t wanna end up like them.

On the bright side, we beat Texas — which ranked 36th in bars and liquor stores per capita — at something. So that’s cause for celebration, right?

*Oxford Karma does not condone binge drinking, though we do condone having lots of bars, liquor stores and breweries … for convenience’s sake.
